Samsung S5620 Monte Embarrasses Many Smartphones
These days, you can’t tell a smartphone from a dumbphone unless you read the specs and zero in on the section of Operating System. Blurring the Smartphone Distinction
Not only does the Monte look like a smartphone from the outside, it sports Samsung’s TouchWiz 2.0 UI that makes it look, feel and act like a smartphone when turned on. It competes not only among fine upscale feature phones but also offers and clear advantage over budget and mid-range smartphones.
It’s a dual band 3G/UMTS phone a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G. You get HSDPA at 3.5 MBps, WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and standard microUSB 2.0 HS. There’s SatNav functionality with a built-in A-GPS receiver using Google Maps 3.0 like in many smartphones. It gets better with Google Latitude that pinpoints your exactly location coordinates wherever you are.
There’s a 3-inch Wide QVGA with 256k colors that may be common in many affordable full-touchscreens, smart or not, but this one gets it better with a capacitive touchscreen many smartphones miss out. There’s also as accelerometer for turn-to-mute and auto rotate features. Other features wanting in some smartphones include a 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera that feature smile detection, geo tagging and a QVGA video recording at 15fps.
This one even has a front-facing CIF camera that’s handy with 3G video calls. Entertainment on the road gets the usual multimedia players, an FM stereo with RDS and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Listening on it gets a boost with DNSe (Dynamic Natural Sound engine) for a choice of normal, surround or simple stereo widening.
While you only have a 227 MB of internal memory you get a hot-swappable microSD expansion for up to 16 GB. Its 960 mAh li-ion battery powers the handset for up to 9 hours of talk time and 770 hours of standby time when fully charged.

The Monte emerges as one of the latest feature phone to redefine its genre and put smartphones on the defensive. While smartphones have started to target the budget crowd, many do so with severe feature compromises, like no WiFi, no GPS and a smallish display with resistive touchscreen or a mediocre camera.
While smartphones enjoy multitasking, that’s one feature many mobile phones users need not bother. And while downloadable apps provide the main advantage, feature phones are starting to have that as well.
