BlackBerry Amazon App

Amazon App for BlackBerry goes live

by Peter Ha

BlackBerry Amazon App

The rate at which RIM updates BAW is horrendous. I get countless e-mails every day about new apps launching for the BlackBerry and they’re nowhere to be seen in the store. So it comes as no surprise that I had to go directly to Amazon to download their new app. God forbid it actually be available in BAW.

Like the iPhone app before it, the BlackBerry version also does its voodoo magic with “Amazon Remembers,” which is a pretty wicked awesome feature. If you’re unfamiliar with AR it goes a little something like this – snap a photo of a product, photo gets uploaded to Amazon and then a few seconds later it spews out a listing for that product. Pretty rad, huh? Other features include:

* Purchase using Amazon’s 1-Click ordering and Amazon Prime
* Track packages or modify orders using the Your Account feature
* Receive personalized recommendations
* View editorial and customer reviews
* Get the Gold Box Deal of the Day
* Access to their Wish List

Navigate your BB here to download the app.

Windows Live client for Windows Mobile

Microsoft releases all new Windows Live client for Windows Mobile

by Robin Wauters

Windows Live may seem like a failure in the eyes of many a TechCrunch reader, but there are a number of services that continue to thrive within the scope of a vast, mainstream audience. Hence it’s worth noting that Microsoft has released a new application for Windows Mobile devices that encompasses a slew of Live services used by dozens of millions of people every day.

The new version (v10.06.0046.0800) of the Windows Live For Windows Mobile client, which is evidently free of charge, includes mobile versions of Windows Live Hotmail (works with both both pull and push sync), Windows Live Messenger (finally!), Windows Live Contacts, Windows Live Spaces, Microsoft Live Search and enhanced photo upload capabilities. The app comes in a Pro version for touch-enabled devices and a Standard version for non-touch phones, and is available in 25 languages.

The mobile web version is also still available, and features a new beta version of Windows Live Hotmail which offers a number of welcome additions like the ability to see full HTML pages within e-mail messages and a new email search feature, next to a revamped UI and navigation enhancements for touch-screen devices.

BlackBerry App Store

RIM Debuts App Store for BlackBerry

By Nathan Eddy

Following the lead of Apple’s successful App Store for the iPhone smartphone, Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the BlackBerry, uses the CTIA Wireless conference to announce their own application store, BlackBerry App World.

Research In Motion (RIM) makers of the popular BlackBerry smartphones, used the CTIA Wireless convention in Las Vegas to announce its answer to Apple’s highly regarded online application store, BlackBerry App World, where users can download applications directly from their BlackBerry smartphone.

The “on-device” store supports both free and for-purchase applications and is available to BlackBerry smartphone users in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, with more country launches to follow. The design is centered on a “front page carousel” which allows users to browse through a select number of featured applications. RIM said featured applications would vary from week to week, although a “top apps” feature will supply uses with a list of the most popular applications.

“The BlackBerry platform provides a truly unparalleled mobile experience for millions of people and we are thrilled today to enhance that experience with a new app store that helps connect consumers with developers and carriers,” said RIM president and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis. “BlackBerry App World aggregates a wide variety of personal and business apps in a way that makes it very easy for consumers to discover and download the apps that suit them while preserving the appropriate IT architecture and controls required by our enterprise customers.”

BlackBerry App World includes a keyword search capability as well as application reviews and recommendations, which can be sent to other people through email, PIN, SMS message or BlackBerry Messenger. The store also includes a folder called My World, which can keep track of applications the user has downloaded. It functions as a personal storage space that allows users to uninstall and re-install applications and to transfer purchased applications to a new BlackBerry smartphone.

RIM said it expects approximately 1,000 applications to be posted by partners on BlackBerry App World this week, including applications from Salesforce.com, The New York Times, Bloomberg and MTV Networks. The company said the store is available for BlackBerry smartphones with a trackball or touch-screen running BlackBerry device software 4.2 or higher.

“BlackBerry App World provides a fantastic new resource for consumers and an equally exciting progression of business opportunities for our developer and carrier partners,” said Jim Balsillie, co-CEO. “We are launching BlackBerry App World with a solid selection and we look forward to working with our partners to continue delivering the types of apps that best suit our customers’ personalized needs and interests.”
